WAHO in partnership with West African universities to build the capacities of health professionals in gender, human rights, reproductive health and communication for behavior change

Ouagadougou, 22 January 2018 – The West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) organized, from 22 January 2018 to 02 February 2018 in Burkina Faso a training program leading to certification at the level of Certificate in gender, human rights, reproductive health and communication for behavior change. This training, which is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of health of Burkina Faso and the University of Ouaga II, is in line with the WAHO regional program « Demography, Sexual and Reproductive Health » (DEMSAN) funded by the French Agency for Development (AFD)

 

 

The official launch of this training took place on Monday 22 January 2018, in the presence of the Minister of Health of Burkina Faso, the Deputy Director General of WAHO, the Vice- Chancellor of the University of Ouaga II, the Director of the University Institute for Basic and Continuing Education (IUFIC) of the University of Ouaga II, trainers, beneficiaries of the training and WAHO staff.

In his speech, the Deputy Director General of WAHO, Dr. Laurent ASSOGBA, underscored the importance of developing human resources. « Development is achieved through the development of human capital and capacity building contributes to the development of human resources ». That is why WAHO is organizing, in collaboration with the Ministries of health, capacity building sessions for the human resources of ECOWAS member States, the Deputy Director General indicated.

Dr. Assogba also emphasized the importance WAHO attaches to the promotion of priority health policies and programs in the region as well as the strengthening of strategic partnerships for health, which is included as a priority program in WAHO’s 2016-2020 strategic plan.

The training leading to certification at the certificate level in IEC-BCC/Gender-human rights and reproductive health, aims at building the capacities of 30 professionals from various ministries, NGOs and Associations in Burkina Faso, and five (05) auditors with knowledge in public health, human and social sciences, and child protection and rights.  It is within the framework of its mission that WAHO decided to work in partnership with Universities in the West Africa region.

Through the regional program « Demography, Sexual and Reproductive Health » (DEMSAN) WAHO adopted this offer of training from the University Institute for Basic and Continuing Education, approved by the statutory bodies of the University of Ouaga II.

The Deputy Director General appealed to be students to take advantage of their training and make themselves capable of operationalizing public health policies in general and those of reproductive health in particular by including the gender dimension, with an approach based on the human rights and communication for behavior change. The Minister of Health, Dr. Nicolas MEDA, made the official speech for the launch of the training program, and did not fail to thank WAHO for the multiple forms of support provided.
